Achieving Humor in Educating Rita by Willy Russell Essay -- Educating

Achieving Humor in Educating Rita by Willy Russell Written by Willy Russell in 1985, "Educating Rita" is a comical interpretation of his own life as a young Liverpudlian hairdresser and his aspirations to become educated. The play is based on Rita, the hairdresser who wants a better life, and begins this adventure by enrolling in an Open University course. It is here she meets her tutor, Frank. You could say, the key to her dreams. If I were to direct this play, I would seek to achieve humour for an audience by exploring the different aspects of comedy; comedy of character, comedy of situation, comedy of misunderstanding and comedy of language. There are many examples of comedy of character in this play, especially as Russell has created such strong and impressionable characters. Rita, the quick tongued, outspoken, witty character is a foundation for humour as she isn't afraid to speak her mind. An excellent example of her humorous character is Rita's first meeting with Frank, her soon-to-be tutor. As she enters his office, she notices a risqui picture on the wall and is unable to resist commenting on how "It's very erotic." and defending her opinion by saying "there's no suppose about it," and using the imperative, "Look at those tits." The audience should find this humorous as it is as they would be shocked at her sudden outburst to an 'authority figure' in the play. However, in order to achieve maximum humour for the audience, I would emphasize Rita's Liverpudlian accent and Rita would speak naturally to show her openness and her self-confidence. Frank's reaction to Rita's outburst is also vital if humour is to be achieved. Frank is rather unsettled by Rita's confidence and to show this, his reaction should be delayed and confused to show his inability to keep up with Rita's quick tongue. It is imperative that this scene gives the audience the impression that this play is humorous, as it is the first time the audience meets the characters. Frank's attitude towards Rita is another good example of comedy of character. As a tutor in an university, the audience would expect Frank to be very formal, however, he isn't in this situation. Frank reveals his comic personality to the audience as he discusses a window in his office to Rita. He tells her that he "sometimes get an urge to throw something through it usually a stu... ...tes dramatically. "Sod them - no, fuck them!" This shows how similar Frank and Rita can be no matter how well educated of high class Frank is. In order to maximise humour, Frank would be excessive and over the top to show the effect of alcohol on Frank. Comedy of situation is used throughout the play and is used with different aspects of comedy, such as when Rita first entered Frank's office at the beginning of the play and Rita's use of language. It is difficult to have comedy of situation on its own, so I would do what Russell did, combine it with another aspect for maximum comedy effect. Willy Russell has used every aspect of comedy to their full advantage and has achieved highlighting class differences through comedy. When Russell wrote the play, he wrote it to be performed and wrote stage directions too. Personally, I would not change that because that is the way he intended it to be, but I would concentrate on body language, facial expressions and how they talk, e.g. the tone. So, if I were directing 'Educating Rita' I would seek to achieve humour for the audience? Simply by exploring the different aspects of comedy that Willy Russell has used so well.

Images and Imagery in Shakespeares Macbeth Essay -- GCSE English Lite

Imagery in Macbeth     Ã‚     In Shakespeare's tragic play, Macbeth, the use of imagery is connected with character development as well as theme throughout the play.  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚        Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   From the beginning of the play the image of darkness is introduced.   Darkness was called upon by Banquo, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth.   Banquo, in his aside to Macbeth says,    But tis strange and oftentimes, to win us to our harm, /the instruments of darkness tell us truths, /win us with honest trifles, to betray us in deepest consequence (I.ii.131-135).      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Banquo shows he is immediately aware that the witches are associated with darkness. He chooses not to act on the witches' prophecies, but to be wary and reluctant.   He is not ready to involve himself with the witches, since he sees them as a dark force.   However, Macbeth is on opportunist and the image of darkness reveals his deepest, darkest desires.   This is shown in Macbeth's aside,    The Prince of Cumberland!   that is a step/ On which I must fall down or else o'ver-leap, / For in my way it lies.   Stars, hide your fires;/ Let not light see my black and deep desires" (I.iv.55-58).      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   It becomes apparent that it bothered Macbeth a great deal to hear that Malcolm was named successor to King Duncan.   In response, Macbeth calls on darkness to hide his evil thoughts.   Lady Macbeth also conjures up the forces of darkness to ensure the heavens don't see her having these thoughts,    Come, thick night, /And pall thee in the dunnest smoke of hell, /That my keen knife see not the wound it makes, / N'or heaven peep through the blanket of the dark, /To cry, "Hold, hold" (I.v.53-57!      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   By the end of Act I, we can see that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth have... ...er fit in and was never comfortable with a role he obtained by evil means.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Shakespeare's images are not only connected to his characters and theme but also are woven into a moral message.   Shakespeare is warning his audience to refrain from getting caught up in the pool of blood and darkness. One will never be satisfied with his achievements if he obtains them by unholy means.   Self-gratification comes from the honest pursuit of worthwhile goals.      Works Cited Shakespeare, William, Macbeth, Toronto: Harcourt Brace and Company, Inc, 1988. The Host Book Review

The Host Book Review Melanie Stryder is one of few â€Å"wild† human rebels who have evaded the alien souls currently taking over the Earth. With her younger brother, Jamie, and the man she loves, Jared Howe, Mel is on the run from souls who hunt down host bodies for use. Souls are creatures that rely on host bodies to survive. After insertion, they erase any mental presence of the being originally there and establish a claim over the body and mind. Earth is Wanderer's ninth planet, and Mel is her ninth host body.Upon waking inside her new body, she is shocked not only by the vividness of human emotions, memories, and senses, but quickly learns that Melanie Stryder is not willing to give up the entirety of her mind. Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight Saga has often been described as vampire fiction for people who don’t like vampires. It is fair to say that with The Host, her latest novel, she has once again managed to break the usual genre stereotypes. This time, writing a science fiction novel for people who don’t like science fiction.Unlike the most popular alien invasion movies and science fiction television shows, The Host doesn’t have Will Smith or Richard Dean Anderson to save the planet against a background of gun fire, secret weapons, and loud explosions. In The Host humanity is lost, vastly outnumbered and overwhelmed by superior technology. There are tiny pockets of resistance left; just a handful of humans who have yet been captured, but they don’t spend their days plotting to retake the planet from the aliens.Just trying to survive consumes all their time. The Host isn’t really about saving the planet from alien invaders; it’s a story about what it is to be human, about identity and about individuality. Most of all The Host is a story about the nature of love. Romantic  love, love of family, love of friends – all of these emotions are explored by Wanderer as she first surrenders to Melanieâ₠¬â„¢s emotional memories then surrenders to the emotions for herself. There is more than just memories left of Melanie though; she is trapped inside her own head unable to take control of her own body, forced to be an unwilling host to the alien Wanderer. Which makes things very interesting when Wanderer and Melanie eventually meet up with Melanie’s loved ones. Possibly the largest similarity between The Host and Stephenie Meyers Twilight Saga is the character of Wanderer. She has something of a Bella vibe going on. It is the way that they are both self sacrificing.Wanderer’s alien nature actually makes her even more self sacrificing than Bella which means that she needs others to look out for her and take care of her since she has little instinct for self preservation. Unlike the Twilight Saga, I would recommend The Host for both teens and adults. Stephenie Meyer wrote this book to attract a wide audience. All in all The Host makes a very compelling read. Avoiding the obvious science fiction cliches, it concentrates on humanity and the human emotions experienced by an alien invader who really wants to be a human.

The voluntary sector is also linked to the hugger-mugger sector because they can have sponsorship from the clubby sector. The voluntary sector is funded by the members of there own club, for example in a football team you have to pass a subscribe on tilt, pay for planning facilities and pay match fees which usually covers the cost of team kit and the fee for the referee. He develops a postmodern Marxism that learns from and does not top in to the detotalizing implications of postmodern theory.Although umpteen of Jamesons references are from refinement and literary productions whereas Habermass, for example, are from kind theory and communion theory Jameson in effect does postmodern faultfinding theory in his readings of works of books, architecture, music, painting, and philosophy, presenting not moreover when slopped textual analysis exactly expanding his readings into oversimplifications sooner homogeneous to those of postmodern kind theorists (e. . , Aronowitz, Luke) in affable attainment disciplines. heathenish studies is intrinsically a pandisciplinary hurtle in the sense that shade, as the Birmingham theorists conceptualized it, is not evidently plant in prevalent life as well as in museums and contrive halls that too disquiets a simple lay of disciplines in the gentle acquirements or human studies, broadly speaking conceived. near no amicable science or arts discipline falls remote of the potential sensible horizon of ethnical studies, which could be seen as a metaphysical perspective, a discipline, a corpus of writing, and purge an investigatory methodology. worry the unit for criticism at the University of Illinois, in which Cary Nelson, Lawrence Grossberg, and Norman Denzin had parttime energy appointments, the CCCS at the University of Birmingham has brought unitedly scholars from a intermixture of disciplines.the likes of interdisciplinary realises such as cognitive science, heathen studies is a glaring interdisciplinary project collection scholars who swear they cannot practice their spare-time activitys in pagan studies deep down their substructure disciplines or who want to pack an individuality nearly different from their disciplinary identities. By and large, scholars in humanistic discipline departments sop up been split able to do and teach pagan studies deep down their hearthstone disciplines, especially where their family line disciplines gravel overcompensated the new postcanonical, postcolonial, libber scholarship. kindly scientists engage had a greater dip to come upon their interest in pagan studies external of their disciplines proper, many of which gain been disincline to desolate their relatively narrow-minded concepts of destination in favor of a more comprehensive one or do not avow the need to practice the canvas of culture outdoor(a) of a discipline for which the survey of culture has forever and a day been central, such as sociology and anthropology. This banknote amid the ship canal that humanists and tender scientists relieve oneself up their identities, affiliations, and academic practices as heathenish studies scholars is in like manner replicated in their several(prenominal) attitudes toward the proposition of politicization. Al though nigh scholars around the campus who do ethnic studies are collectivist and feminist, genial scientists extend to position ethnic studies as an observational and theoretical character without resolve ties to political sympathies, thusly legitimizing their work indoors basalally empiricist and objectivist disciplines. adult maleists persist to embrace their exclude ties to politics, as the Birmingham scholars did, horizontal rivalry that curricular politics, including the politics of the average and the scorn to dress and follow up multi paganism, is an authorized place for loving change today. cultural studies increasingly splits into politicized and nonpolitical camps, through the spring conclave lineage from Marxist cultural theory and joining the influences of the Birmingham School, feminism, and Baudrillard. The last mentioned crowd embroils scholars who do not view cultural studies as a political project that slenderly as an matter for int ensify their own disciplines or operative crossways disciplines. untold work on touristed culture, such as that of the wheel discolour group mentioned, comes from this second base group. Humanists are more likely than kindly scientists to expire to the firstborn group. This is satirical in that left wing and feminist cultural studies grew out of Marxist complaisant and cultural theory and only later(prenominal) were modify by humanists such as Jameson to their own projects. In this sense, exact social theorists winding in culture tend to clustering in humanities programs, or if they work in social science departments, they are typically marooned among their colleagues. It is much more common to find gathers of culturally orientated critical social theorists exterior the social sciences, for instance, in side and proportional literature departments and programs.though these relative literature students and module are more ostensibly and blatantly politicized t han most of my in one case colleagues and students, they approach society through the text. This sign is farther from absolute. Nevertheless, much of the scoop out critical social science and social theory is being through in humanities disciplines. Sociology, for instance, seek greater institutional authenticity by attempting to observe and merge the methods of the pictorial sciences.Disciplines such as English, comparative literature, womens studies, and media studies were touch with culture as well as politics and thus were public meeting points for capability and students enkindle in the politics of culture. quality 2 contemporaneous bondage breaches the basic right of all persons to life, freedom and the gage of the person, and to be change state from thrall in all its types.
