Deforestation Has This Global Pandemic Finally Been...

Imagine: animals flee in horror as their homes are cleared out by bulldozers and chainsaws; overhead birds are soaring, scavenging for a new nest after their tree viciously crashed to the ground. However, miles of barren and dead land are all these poor animals can find. Now to some people, this may resemble a cheesy animated movie where the animals have voices and eventually fight back to win their freedom. However, to innocent animals around the world, this is no laughing matter: this is reality. It has been found that through the years, millions of plant and animal species have been driven to extinction because they were deprived of a home (â€Å"Deforestation Stats, Statistics on†). â€Å"Seventy percent of Earth’s land animals and plants live†¦show more content†¦All that is required is motivation and time; with these two objects, the world can work together to rebuild what used to be great forests and pave way for new forests to thrive. In the past decad es, deforestation has plagued the world’s environment at an increasing rate, but, if humankind takes initiative and works together towards reversing these deadly effects, there is hope for a better future. The first step to solving any problem is to find the source. In this situation, the culprits are miners and loggers. â€Å"Commercial logging companies cut down mature trees that have been selected for their timber†¦ a large hole is left in the canopy and complete regeneration takes hundreds of years† (The Causes of Rainforest†). Millions of quality trees are cut down every day for production of wood products, leaving an unlivable gap in their place. Miners are not any better; they begin by clearing land for their projects and then create roads which cut through the rainforest (The Causes of Rainforest†). These actions disrupt the rainforest, and innocent trees are sacrificed for accessibility. Between these two professions, forests stand no chance of survival. Now honestly, most people will wonder why they should care about the welfare of animals and forests, and take action if it does not directly affect them. The answer to this question happens to be quite straightforward: our environment depends on forests. As stated on the website for the â€Å"Billion TreeShow MoreRelatedEssay on The Adaptive Parasite3152 Words   |  13 Pagesare lethal viruses that exist for which there is currently no vaccine or cure, and there are various emerging viruses that are infectious to humans. The Sun As A Medium Sized Star Measuring The Earth

A’rianna Duval Mrs. Kent English 8th 2 February 2015 The Sun The sun is actually a star just like the stars that shine throughout the night. The sun is a medium-sized star measuring 864,948mi (1,392,000km) across--100 times the diameter of the earth (Farndon 47). The core, the convection zone, and the photosphere are four main layers of the sun. The core makes energy from hydrogen for the world’s sight (Elvis 12). About 99 percent of the energy generated by the sun through nuclear fusion is produced in its core (Koehler 14). Photons transport energy generated in the sun’s core. This movement from the sun’s core is not instant, in fact, it can take up to 150,000 years for energy to reach the photosphere. From the photosphere, energy generated in the core streams into the sun’s atmosphere and out into space. This energy that lights and heats the earth (14). The secret of the sun’s power lies in its center, or core. Core temperatures reach more than 27 million degrees Fahrenheit (in Celsius it reaches up to 15 million degrees). The plasma is about 150 times denser than water (Koehler 14). Under a massive amount of pressure heat and burning happens (Jefferis 10). During the heat and burning process, particles of hydrogen join together, or fuse to make hydrogen. While this is happening, energy is being given off. It is this power that provides the sun’s heat and light. Further out, the core heats layers of gas in the convection zone. Last, energy reaches the surface of the sunShow MoreRelatedEssay On Star823 Words   |  4 Pages Im doing a project in science class on a star and i chose to write 10 paragraphes on 10 different stars and one paragraph will be 2 stars and after we do that we are having to make a 3d project of 1 of the stars and i picked the red saint and im going to make it out of paper mache enjoy long rea d. Organizational Assessment Restructuring and Evidence †Free Samples

Question: Discuss about the Organizational Assessment Restructuring and Evidence. Answer: Introduction: 3M1 is an innovative organization. It is a new organization and within a span of 100 years, it has become one of the most innovative organization of the world. The company has been highly innovative organization; however, from the last few years, the innovation capability of the organization has declined. The current report analyzes the issues in the innovation capabilities of the organization. One of the major issues that the company is facing is the way in which the company operates. Since, the company focuses on innovations and techniques of innovation; therefore, it is important for the company to improvise regularly with the advent of new technology and the identification of new needs. The company is more than 100 years old. As a result, the technologies used are mostly primitive and based on old methods. However, with the development of new technologies, the competitors are using these innovated and improvised technologies to their advantage. This is bad for the company because clients are getting better and faster results from the competitors (Bansemir, 2013). Since, the newer technologies give results much faster and in efficient manner, so customers are approaching competitors to get faster results. The organization is very large in size; therefore, it is difficult to adopt new technologies and the production techniques. The employees are also accustomed to use the traditional methods for the business operations and the processes of the organization. In order to successfully implement new technologies, it is important to train the employees in new technologies which in itself is a challenging in terms of cost and effort. Issues due to Social Determinism The social determinism theory states that the behavior of an individual or an organization is dependent upon the social interactions and constructs. It means that an individual behave in a certain manner or his personality is developed in accordance to his past behavior. The company is facing difficulties because it is behaving in accordance to social determinism theory. The company is using past tactics for the innovative ideas. However, with the advancement in technologies, the competitors are using different kinds of methods such as brainstorming to derive ideas of innovations. Although the company wants to foster innovation as it is dependent upon the innovation capability of the organization, the company has developed certain systems for innovation and it is difficult to modify it. In case of 3M1, social ideas play significant role in determining the innovations that are brought by the company. As a result the innovations are consistent (Daugherty, 2015). Although the company encourages freedom of thoughts, the employees are afraid to engage in innovative ideas as they are afraid of failure. There is always the probability of failure and chances that the ideas will not work out. Sometimes, innovations is also dependent on accidental success. However, it is important to provide specific environment wherein the employees have free time and creativity to encourage in innovative ideas. Additionally the new organizations are using modern techniques to succeed. As a result, the constantly adopting new technology will be a challenge for the company (Lin, Chen Su, 2017). The company should adopt to modern techniques and start using technologies for innovations. Issues due to Dominating Workers The company has given quite a few privileges to the employees. The company realizes that keeping the employees satisfied with the work is essential in increasing the productivity of the organization. The employers realize that giving flexible and positive environment is necessary to increase the performance of the employees. However, sometimes this strategy does not work in the favor of the company. That is because the employees fail to deliver ideas that are not very feasible. Giving additional time may tamper the efficiency of the organization. The policy of the company allows the workers to work on ideas in their free and leisure time. This has negative impact on the performance of the company because there is a high probability that the workers would fail to deliver. Another policy that the company has adopted is to allow the workers to go for bootlegging (Hodges, 2016). The company has been giving the employees too much liberty that might cause in decreased performance of the co mpany. The company should implement effective administrative system in which the managers would be able to implement innovative strategies to encourage innovation within the organization. The company has presence in more than 20 countries and has a very large and diversified workforce. There is a significant number of female workforce in the organization. The business organization realizes that bringing diversified workforce can bring new ideas within the organization which can encourage innovation in the organization. However, it has been observed in many cases that the females are more creative and concerned for the aesthetic beauty of the customer products. The females have an inclination towards the aesthetic beauty and can design visually appealing products (Brynjolfsson Saunders, 2013). Therefore, they should be a part of the innovation team of the organization. Therefore, the company should adopt policies to train the female staffs with the latest technologies in an organized manner (Morais da Costa, 2011). The company should also start appointing female employees who are well versed with latest technologies and have the zeal to learn them. The company needs to appoint female employees who are better versed with latest technologies because in the field of innovations, technologies play very significant role and appointing females with knowledge in technologies would help to improve the performance of the company. Sometimes, it is also seen that the female employees have different kinds of c omplicacies (Organizational Restructuring, 2016). The company needs to develop policies and rules to improve the working conditions for female workers. Issues associated to End User Innovation The company follows the policy of innovation which is focused on the end user demands. The company introduces ideas keeping in mind the demands of the clients. The company prefers to deliver the ideas based on the demands of the customers. The company tries to understand the demands of the customers and design the innovations accordingly. However, this might turn out to be a problem for the company. Sometimes, the demands of the customers are very awkward and the company fails to deliver because of several reasons (Rossignoli, Gatti Agrifoglio, 2016). One of the common reasons for the failure is the incompetency of the suppliers. This should be prevented because it has adverse effect on the reputation of the company. The company should have ideas about the capabilities of the suppliers and should accept orders from the customers accordingly. The company has a developed a culture of innovation in its working procedures. The company prefers the employees to develop a habit of using innovative ideas in everyday life. Even in the organizational functions the company motivates the employees to use innovative ideas. This culture has been developed by presenting anecdotes and case histories to motivate employees (Chandler, 2016). But with the current generations, it is very difficult to convince employees in such a way. The current generation relies on facts and figures. The company should try to convince the employees by providing facts and figures rather than using previous cases. The culture of innovation should be nurtured by giving present case scenarios and using facts and figures as proofs. The company claims to be based mostly on technologies and use of technologies to bring about innovations. The company focuses on using technologies to bring innovations. However it should be kept in mind that the company is more than 100 years old. As a result the technologies that are being used in the company are quite old and require updating. Communications has also evolved by a great deal through the years. The company has to change its infrastructure accordingly to make it sure that it is at par with the latest technologies (Lewis, 2013). The company needs to introduce technologies so that communications in the organization improves and allows the employees to communicate with each other in a better and improvised manner. Since communication is of great importance for coordinated works, therefore it is important for the company to develop communications so that the employees are able to communicate with each other in a much more efficient manner so that the performance of the c ompany improves. Issues associated to economy and job The company needs to improve its work scenario. The company allows the employees to adopt any kind of measures in order to bring success and innovations. Sometimes these techniques are not entirely correct and might cause issues. The company needs to adopt technologies so that the employees follow proper work ethics such that no ethical issues are caused due to their operational techniques. The company allows the employees to bootleg. This strategy might cause the company to face legal and authoritative issues (Bean, 2011). Additionally the company allows the employees to work under any conditions they find suitable. This can be a major issue for the company because sometimes the workers might give substantial lack while working. In such cases the company needs to follow strict and well developed managerial plans. In order to overcome the adversities faced by the company due to advancement of technologies, the company needs to adopt advanced and well developed technologies so that the company stays at par with eth competitors. In order to do so the company needs to change the infrastructure and introduce new technologies to the company. It is also necessary for the company to bring in experts who are able to implement the new technologies. Experts need to be hired who would efficiently bring the necessary changes in the infrastructure of 3M1. Even the skill sets of the employees needs to be improved in order to make sure that they are able to cope up with the change in technology and infrastructure of the company. Solution related to Social Determinism Theory The company has adopted a policy of allowing the employees to work according to their free will. This might have been steering the company to success. But there are issues and problems associated to it. Even if the company allows the employees to work with their free will, it is important that the company regulates and controls the extent to which the freedom is given to them for instance the company should limit the amount of bootlegging that has been allowed. The company should also monitor the activities carried out by the employees and make sure that they are not given excessive liberty. In order to manage the issues due to dominating workers, the company needs to employ staffs who would monitor the activities of the staffs and make sure that the staffs remain in the limits and the liberty given to them is controlled. The company also needs to make sure that the staffs are guided in the proper manner so that the works are done on time and in an organized manner. In order to make sure that the company does not get involved in any kind of authoritative issues, legal aspects should also be kept in mind while monitoring the employees. The company employs female staffs. But quite often it has been seen that the staffs are not very skilled with the innovative ideas that the company implements. Additionally sometimes the female employees face complicacies while working in the company. While recruiting female employees it is necessary to make sure that the employees are able to comply with the requirements of the company. It is also important to make sure that the female employees are given special liberties within the limits and in case the employees are not trained properly, the company should train the female employees properly. Solving issues associated to End User Innovation The policy of end user innovation has been creating problems for the company. Due to its policy of innovating according to the requirements the company had to face different issues. Sometimes the suppliers failed and the company had to turn down the contract which resulted in the spoiling of reputation. The company needs to consult with the suppliers before confirming the clients to deliver a certain task. 3M1 follows the strategy of motivating the employees by providing instances of stories and anecdotes. However they current generations are influenced more by facts and figures. The company should adopt the policy of influencing the employees by providing facts and figures. The company has been using communication techniques that are quite old. In order to make sure that the employees are able to communicate better, the company needs to adopt advanced communication techniques. It would also help to improve the performance of the company because it would help he company perform better. Finally the company needs to improve its job scenario. In order to make sure that the employees are follow the work ethics and perform properly, the company needs to implement proper administrative techniques to make sure that the activities of the employees are monitored properly. The company has been following the policy of allowing the employees to work according to their will. However in the current scenario such a trend is difficult to maintain. In order to make sure that the employees follow order and maintain a disciplined routine, a manager should be appointed who would act as the guide for the employees. This will help the organization to have a systematic and well organized work procedure. References Bansemir, B. (2013).Organizational Innovation Communities. Postmodern Cultural Studies free essay sample

Cultural Studies and the Academy 1. Cultural studies in the academies of the advanced capitalist countries has transformed the object of studies in the humanities. In particular, in English departments, cultural studies has challenged the predominance of the governing categories of literary studies (the canon, the homogeneous period, the formal properties of genre, the literary object as autonomous and self-contained) in the interest of producing readings of all texts of culture and inquiring into the reproduction of subjectivities. To this end, pressure has been placed on disciplinary boundaries, the methods which police these boundaries, and modes of interpretation and critique have been developed which bring, for example, economics and politics to bear on the formal properties of texts. In addition, the lines between high culture and mass culture have been relativized, making it possible to address texts in terms of their social effectivity rather than their inherent literary, philosophical or other values. We will write a custom essay sample on Postmodern Cultural Studies or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page 2. The two most significant categories which have supported these institutional changes have been ideology and theory. Althusserian and post-althusserian understandings of ideology, which defined ideology not in terms of a system of ideas or world view but in terms of the production of subjects who recognize the existing social world as the only possible and reasonable one, made possible the reading of texts in terms of the ways in which the workings of ideology determined their structure and uses. Marxist and post-structuralist theories, meanwhile, focused critical attention on the conditions of possibility of discourses, and upon the exclusions and inclusions which enable their articulation. In both cases, critique becomes possible insofar as reading is directed at uncovering the invisible possibilities of understanding which are suppressed as a condition of the texts intelligibility. 3. I support these efforts to transform the humanities into a site of ultural critique. I will argue that what is at stake in these changes is the uses of pedagogical institutions and practices in late capitalist society. If pedagogy is understood, as I would argue it should be, as the intervention into the reproduction of subjectivities, then the outcome of struggles over culture and cultural studies will determine whether or not the Humanities will become a site at which the production of oppositional subjectivities is made possible. Historically, the Humanities has been a site at which the contradictions of the subjectivities required by late capitalist culture have been addressed and managed. For example, the central concepts of post-World War Two literary criticism, such as irony, have the function of reducing contradictions to the complexity and irrationality of reality, thereby reconciling subjects to those contradictions. 4. However, these recent changes in the academy have been very partial and contradictory. They have been partial in the sense that much of the older or traditional modes of literary studies have remained untouched by these developments, or have only made some slight accommodations to them. They have also been contradictory in the sense that cultural studies has accommodated itself to existing practices, by producing new modes of fetishizing texts and preserving conservative modes of subjectivity. In this way, cultural studies continues to advance the ideological function of the modern Humanities in a changed social environment. . The right wing attacks these changes, chargingas in the ongoing PC scarethat the Humanities are abandoning their commitment to objectivity and the universal values of Western culture. My argument is that these commitments and values have been undermined by social developments which have socialized subjects in new ways while concentrating global socio-economic power within an ever-shrinking number of transnational corporations. The intellectual and political tendencies coordinated by cultural studies, then, are responding to these transformations by allowing academic business to go on as usual, and providing updated and therefore more useful modes of legitimation for capitalist society. 6. The contradictions of these changes in the mode of knowledge production need to be understood within the framework of the needs of the late capitalist social order. The emergence of theory and (post)Althusserian understandings of ideology reflected and contributed strongly to the undermining of liberal humanism (in both its classical and social-democratic versions) as the legitimating ideology of capitalism. The discrediting of liberal humanism, first under the pressures of anti-colonialist revolts and then as a result of the anti-hegemonic struggles in the advanced capitalist heartlands, revealed a deep crisis in authority and hegemony in late capitalist society. This discrediting also revealed the need for new ideologies of legitimation, free from what could now be seen as the naivete of liberal humanist universalism, now widely viewed as a cover for racist, sexist and anti-democratic institutions. 7. The institutional tendencies which have produced the constellation of practices which can be termed cultural studies have, then, participated both in the attack on liberal understandings and in the development of new discourses of legitimation. The liberal humanism predominant in the academy has increasingly been seen as illegitimate because it depends upon an outmoded notion of private individuality-that is, the modern notion of the immediacy with which the privileged text is apprehended by the knowing subject. In this understanding, literature is understood in opposition to science and technology, as a site where what is essential to our human nature can be preserved or recovered in the face of a social reality where this human essence (freedom) is perpetually at risk. However, the more scientific methods (like semiology) which have undermined the hegemony of new criticism in the American academy, largely through the use of modes of analysis borrowed from structuralist anthropology and linguistics, have themselves been discredited by postmodern theories as largely conservative discourses interested in resecuring disciplinary boundaries (for example, through the classification of genres) and protecting an empiricist notion of textuality. 8. Cultural studies, then, is the result of the combination of the introduction of theory and the politicization of theory enabled by these social and institutional changes. However, the postmodern assault on master narratives (theory) has responded to the discrediting of both structuralism and Marxism in a conservative political environment by redefining politics to mean the resistance of the individual subject to modes of domination located in the discursive and disciplinary forms which constitute the subject. This has opened up the possibility of a new line of development for cultural studies: one in which the local supplants the global as the framework of analysis and description or redescription replaces explanation as the purpose of theoretical investigations. I will argue that the set of discourses which have congealed into what I

Lack of Effective Professional Codes and Motivation Essay

Lack of Effective Professional Codes and Motivation - Essay Example Among the sources of the problem in the company, that the auditing discovered included: Employees require a conducive working environment, one that encourages profitability. Your company lacks such a structure a feature that gives rise to numerous unethical practices most of which derail the operations of the employees at the organization. Motivation and supervision are two primary roles of the management that influences the profitability of a company since they affect the productivity of the employees. The management must, therefore, enhance the motivation of its employees besides securing a conducive working environment for the same employees. This way, it becomes possible to develop a structure of accountability in the company thus improving the productivity of the commercial organization. Two cases of sexual molestation went unreported within the last three months. Such is an avid portrayal of an unconducive working environment. Female employees feel threatened at the organization owing to the abject disregard of the sexual offenses act in the country. The cases of sexual molestation in the company portray the lack of unity between the management and the junior employees of the firm a feature that creates space for the senior managers to use their privileged position to sexually molest the vulnerable female employees. In order to curb such cases and create a conducive working environment for the employees of the firm, my taskforce recommends that the company develops appropriate professional codes of conduct. Through the codes, the management must indicate the behavior it considers unwelcome in the company. Besides the codes, the management must apprehend the specific employees found guilty of molesting their juniors in the past. Such is the only way for the management to reassure its employees of the new changes thus develop  their confidence. Additionally, the management must develop an appropriate bureaucratic structure, one that enables appropriate supervision of the employees in the company.

IT Questions Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

IT Questions - Coursework Example Question 2 Prototyping, which is usually a quick functional model of the system design, is exposed to the users. In our case the students who are expected to be the main users of the software are presented with the prototype for a period of time and they report back give feedback on their experiences. Problems are then identified in real time and any requirements that may have been left out noted. The prototype is then reviewed and the difficulties experienced by the target users rectified. Loopholes in the system are identified and requirements left out incorporated. A brainstorming session, designed to come up with ideas, possibilities and solutions to problems can be a good requirement gathering technique. Stakeholders, such as programmers, managers and the potential users form a think tank. Issues such as how best to present the bookstore’s catalog of items online for example can be visualized. Payment modes and delivery modalities can be born and nurtured in such sessions . Survey tools such as a questionnaire can be used to collect relevant pieces of data that can be help in the requirement gathering process. Use of well-structured questionnaires, designed to give the desired information, such as preferences in design techniques, best payment modes, delivery schedules and so on, can play a vital role in requirement gathering processes. ... Members present can identify problems and suggest solutions to these problems. For example, if a student (who is a potential user of the system) can highlight some of the problems encountered by the current system used by the bookstore, such as time wasting, members can come up with suggestions such as introduction of delivery mechanisms that are time conscious. In the process, requirements may be gathered. Question 3 This system is designed to meet the special accommodation needs of individual students by offering a variety of options based on pricing, location and facilities available to them. On the other hand, hostel owners can provide description of the properties they own by contacting the university’s administration. This system offers advantages for both the students, premise owners and university administration. For students, they are provided with a platform to search from a variety of available hostels and choose those best suited for their individual needs. This sa ves them time and makes it easier to compare the various hostel listed in the database. For the hostel owners, advertising is catered for and therefore cut down on their operational expenses. Finally, the school administration enhances their accommodation needs for their students and helps them monitor the whereabouts of the students. This enhances their mandate to ensure protection of enrolled students. However, the systems could be made even better by enabling online rent payments by students and providing actual photographs of the various listed hostels for the students to view. Mexican Americans and Presidential Elections Essay Example for Free

Mexican Americans and Presidential Elections Essay The United States has generally been a neutral country in its history. However, in 1914, the country was plunged into World War I after being provoked by many attacks. One of many small attacks included â€Å"accidentally† sinking a United States ship that was exporting goods to other England. After the sinking of the Lusitania, once the world’s largest ship, by German U-boats, the United States leaders knew it was time to join the war. Shortly afterwards, United States intervention helped the Allies, mainly France, the United Kingdom, and Russia, end the war, but the country ended up many lives, around one hundred-thousand. While casualties were low in the United States compared to other countries, the country still did not want to suffer more losses. Therefore, the United States went into a state of isolationism following World War I. After 25 years of peace, a second war, World War II, became another prominent issue for the United States. Like the first war, The United States was again provoked into war. On December 7, 1941, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, killing over two thousand civilians. Unlike the first war, the United States decided to quickly join its allies after the bombing rather than waiting to be attacked multiple times. The country again plunged into war, but this time, it was in the war for a much larger period of time compared to the first war. As World War II was a bigger war compared to its predecessor, more soldiers were needed to fight. With more soldiers needed to fight in the war, many people had to leave work to defend their country. This meant that jobs would have many open positions, and this wasn’t good for the economy. In order to fill the spots, the United States invited Mexican Americans to fill in the jobs that had been neglected due to war. The program that was then started was the Bracero Program, which was a program started in 1942 to hire temporary workers from Mexico until the war ended and the people returned home. Soon, over one hundred-thousand contracts were signed to get more Mexican American workers to work in the United States. After the war ended, many of the Mexican Americans were deported back to Mexico. However, because they had a taste of having a real job with real benefits, many wanted to return the United States. Therefore, after World War II had ended, many Mexican Americans began to immigrate to the United States, thereby raising the Mexican American population. With a slowly increasing Mexican American population, there will be more political influence in that group. Specifically, as time progresses, the Mexican American population will accelerate in growth, exponentially raising their political influence. This research paper aims to determine how the political influence of the Mexican American group has changed from 1960, when the population was not growing so quickly, to 2012, when the population growth is more prominent. Because Mexican Americans were given a taste of America, many of them wanted to come to the United States even after being deported. Because the Mexican American voting percentage was low in the 1960 presidential election, one could assume that the Mexican American vote wouldn’t affect the election, but with Kennedy winning by such a narrow margin and with a large percentage of Mexican Americans that voted for Kennedy, he won by the narrow margin because of the Mexican American vote. The election was extremely close with â€Å"Kennedy winning by a plurality of only 144,673 votes† (Schmal). Kennedy got just enough votes to surpass his incumbent. Due to the increasing amount of Mexicans coming into the country and being able to vote, more Mexicans were able to vote for Kennedy although it was just enough for Kennedy to win. Also, â€Å"Kennedy, who received about 85% of the national Hispanic vote,† was able to barely squeeze a victory by having Mexican American supporters (Schmal). With such the limited number of Mexican American voters, Kennedy having the majority barely helped put him ahead of Nixon to win the election. So in the end, without the Mexican American vote, Kennedy could have lost that presidential election; he could have lost thousands of potential votes due to the 85% of the Hispanic population that voted for him. One can see that the presence of Mexican American voters helped Kennedy win his election, but Kennedy didn’t exactly try to gain the Mexican American vote through his policies. What this means is Kennedy didn’t single out a specific group of people to help in the United States. All of Kennedy’s policies were intended to help everyone no matter what race, gender, or religion you were. The Mexican Americans that voted for Kennedy, therefore, simply liked his campaign for the nation. In more recent decades, the Mexican American population has transgressed. According to the Pew Research Center, â€Å"in the decade from 2000 to 2010, the Mexican-American population grew by 7. 2 million as a result of births and 4. 2 million as a result of new immigrant arrivals,† so we know that more Mexican Americans are populating the country from births (The Mexican-American Boom). This also means that throughout the 1940s to now, more Mexican Americans have been populating the United States in order to have more births take place in the United States. Also, this 11. 6 million total increase of Mexican Americans is only comprised of newcomers. Compared to 1960, there was quite a large number of Mexican Americans in the United States during the 2012 presidential election. Also, according to the United States Census, the total population of citizens is 262,856,643. Knowing that the population that is able to vote and the Mexican-American population, one can assume that the vote of the Hispanic population is crucial for the victory of a candidate. With a large Mexican American population, there is, of course, more political influence from the group. However, Obama and Romney had different strategies when it came to appealing to the Mexican Americans. One major thing Romney said was that â€Å"had [my father] been born of Mexican parents, Id have a better shot of winning this† in a secretly recorded video in the home of a private donor for a fundraiser (Llenas). He clearly believes if he were Latino, winning would be easier for him. This obviously offended many Latinos, and anyone who is offended by someone would think twice about voting for a man who has a demeanor that basically offends oneself. Romney saying this considerably hurt his campaign with regard to the Latino vote and, subsequently, the Mexican American vote. These types of comments are very sensitive because many are proud of their heritage and background. Even if not many Mexican Americans were offended, other citizens might have felt bad because Romney did not want to be part of his own race. Although it might have been a joke, a candidate must watch his or her public image at all times. However, Obama took a different approach with the Latino population. Obama knew the Latino vote was crucial, and he even stated: â€Å"I will just be very blunt. Should I win a second term, a big reason I will win a second term is because the Republican nominee and the Republican Party have so alienated the fastest-growing demographic group in the country, the Latino community† (Abdullah). Obama is showing that he knows how big of an influence the Mexican American voters will have. Obama also knows Romney made a mistake when he did nothing to appeal to the group. What’s more, Obama also issued an act: the DREAM Act. This Act allowed illegal individuals to reside in the United States so long as the individuals are working or going to school. Because Obama was more sensitive to the Mexican American population, Obama easily got the majority vote for the Mexican American population, leaving Romney in the dust, and the results of the whole presidential election show this: Obama won the election. Millions of Mexican Americans voted â€Å"with resounding 71 percent support for Obama† because Obama has shown patronage to Spanish people (Siegel). By empathizing with the Mexican Americans, Obama clearly showed he cared more about them than Romney. With the presence of Mexican American voters, Obama easily won the 2012 presidential election. One could see that during this presidential election, the Mexican American voting percentage for the nation was less than three percent. However, if one was to look at the Mexican American voting percentage during the 2012 presidential election in the United States between Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, it would be around twelve percent. Thus, the percentage of Mexican American voters has been increasing throughout the years; therefore, Mexican Americans have more influence power because more are coming with more political power for the group. Comparing the 1960 presidential election to the 2012 presidential election, one can see big differences. First, the percentage of Mexican American voters in 1960 was a mere 3 percent compared to the rather large 12 percent in only 2010 while the population was still growing due to more births (Schmal). From this, one can conclude that the Mexican American vote in 2012 had more influence on the presidential election than the 1960 presidential election. What’s more is that Kennedy, the winner of the prior election, had not done much in order to get any Mexican American votes while Obama clearly had policies, like the DREAM Act, passed to help with the percent of Mexican American votes he had. Therefore, by comparing these two presidential election results and statistics, one can see that with more Mexican Americans voting, it’s imperative for the presidential candidate to sway the Mexican American voters in order to have a better chance of winning the election.

Argument Against Smoking :: Papers Nicotine Tobbacco Argumentative Essays

Expensive highs, expensive addictions, smoking is a worthless habit. Nicotine, like so many other harmful substances, is a drug. They have the power to affect how you feel about yourself and those around you. It takes full control of your body, like your brain has been infected by tar. The three main groups of drugs are legal, illegal and medicinal. Legal and illegal, what is the difference in today's world? Smoking causes fatal hazards and I believe as a consequence, should be made illegal. Smoking is a legal drug worldwide, however, recently many countries such as America and the UK are beginning to realise the affects of another kind of smoking, Passive smoking. Many areas in both countries have restrictions as to where you may smoke. This is a huge step in the right direction. Imagine that there were no restrictions but no smoking at all! Why should many be forced to smoke through the selfish addiction of another? It is our job to take action and inform the country of this silent but deadly killer. Why do people turn their bodies into dilapidated factories with airways of tar and destruction? The answer is Nicotine. Tobacco is both a stimulant, a substance that speeds up the body and a depressant, a substance that slows down the body. The stimulant used in tobacco is Nicotine. This is an addictive drug, which causes havoc within the smoker's body. The body doesn't just get used to the drug but it then depends on it to function normally. Between cigarettes the smoker becomes jittery, irritable and anxious. Nicotine makes your heart beat at nearly twice its regular rate and forces your exhausted, oxygen starved body to work twice as hard. Why put your body through so much torture? Nicotine damages your mind and blocks the crucial nerve signals in the brain. In this way, Nicotine has the same affect as the illegal drugs including heroin, LSD and cannabis. In a recent survey cigarettes have been seen to contain double the amount of chemicals that they should legally be, many of which contain

Maiden Voyage Essay

The given passage taken from Denton Welch’s Maiden Voyage starts with a clear and concise statement that brings focus on mainly three details, the first being that the writer is a lively and independent foreigner or in other words, an extrovert, the second and third being that the time is morning and there are two more characters, Mr Butler and Mr Roote involved respectively. Mr Butler clearly warns the writer that ‘foreigners are not welcome here’ and he should preferably stay out of the locals’ way. This tells us that the Chinese prefer being isolated and like mixing amongst themselves. This statement is quite ironic because Mr Butler himself seems as if he is of English origin. No outgoing traveller would like hearing this and naturally the writer doesn’t like being confined between the four walls of the room when he could be doing several other outdoor activities. The writer also uses strong emotional language such as ‘hated’, ‘fiercely’ and ‘brooding’ to reinforce this. The symbolism of the ‘moth eaten ball and the old tennis racket’ informs the reader that hardly anyone uses the sports equipment. The incredibly rebellious writer vents outs his anger by striking these old worn out balls fiercely against the stable doors. It is this lack of excitement that leads the stubborn writer to trouble. He decides to take matters to his own hands and foolishly escapes out in the country side. Whilst this escape from drudgery is happening, Mr Butler and Mr Roote are so deeply engrossed in their own conversation that they fail to realize that the writer is running away. To the reader, this clearly suggests that they are content not to look outside their own world and have not moved on from this morning’s conversation whereas the writer on the other hand has. The writer uses mysterious and exotic language to describe the country. The still silence, the hot sand, the ‘stunted bushes’ left the writer overwhelmed maybe because he was used to an entirely different landscape. The grass is tall, tall enough for a person to hide and was also described as ‘rank’ maybe because it had a stench to it and also, the fact that it was as ‘sharp as knives’ made it even more hard as well as dangerous to walk on. ‘The soles of my shoes began to burn’ suggests that temperatures were high, high enough to leave the writer dehydrated and exhausted. The reader is left behind with an image similar to that of that of a dream, a hot dream.

Pop Music Magazine Comparison

The magazines that are being compared are two different styles of magazines. One is a pop band magazine and the other is rock. The people in these magazines stereotype the word â€Å"HAMMER† it shows the long hair and shouting into the microphone. The other magazine stereotypes nice clothes and nice hair. The people who read this magazine are emulators they look up to these people and will go at and wear what they wear. They act how they act. The aim of the magazine is to persuade the readers to go out and buy their CDs. The large hammer font connotes heavy metal and banging. They use hooks to try and get the buyers attention like ‘free CD' or ‘free posters'. The use of language is completely different, one says ‘SCREW THE CRITICS' and the other is ‘BLUE ARE BACK' This shows one that is abusive and the other is more formal. There is a close up on blue then there is a long shot of Gareth Gates. The Brat Awards. The institution is â€Å"The Brat Awards†. Presenters where Rob Carpenter and Ashley Curtis, Rob Carpenter represented himself as a typical presenter. He was slick and cool he kept the show moving he was very confident. The audience where famous people they were drunk. Rage against the vending machine too cool to come up and collect their award. The genre was rock. If I was too improve the award ceremony I would have a different location. Pop Band Comparison. The ‘Big Brovas' are attracting a teenage audience. They connote ‘gangsters', ‘ghettos' and ‘rude boys'. They are doing this to attract a certain type audience e.g. ‘townies'. The institution of ‘Big Brovas' is Top Of The Pops. They represent themselves as rude boys when they are probably not at all like in real life. Compared to the ‘Darkness' they are a lot in my opinion because the ‘Darkness' uses high-pitched voices. The tight trousers they wear connote this. ‘Big Brovas' convent swaying and bopping up and down. The ‘Darkness' convent jumping up and down and a lot of movement. The ‘Darkness† institution is Top Of The Pops. Their audience would be older than teenagers. They represent themselves as scruffy people e.g. ripped vests long hair and tight trousers. Pop Music The name of the act is ‘Girls Aloud'. They are a group of young women who came from the institution of pop stars. The name of the song is life got cold. They use white clothes and white make-up to connotes the word cold. They are a pop band whose audience is mainly young girls. They represent themselves as very nicely dressed attractive women. The name of the act is ‘Good Charlotte'. The song name is ‘The Anthem'. The audience is gothic people, he attracts an audience with a rebellious look. The institution is Top Of The Pops. The genre is punk and rock. The act is ‘Lemar'. The song is ‘dance'. Lemar is a male pop singer. His image is clean cut and nicely dressed. The audience varies. The institution is pop stars. Radio Advert. Client's Name: Woolworth Writer: Steven Briesner Duration: Unknown Music Bed: Whistling from Ed, Edd n Eddy SFX: Door Slamming SFX: Footsteps Male Voice: Perfect boys you've just recorded your first number one. Now lets show the people out there this brilliant song. Music: Loud Whistling MVO: That's Brilliant. MVO2: Your Right and it's available now at Woolworth's. MVO3: At the great price of à ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½2.49 MVO4: Woolworth's we're worth it. Popular Music This magazine aims to entertain people as David Bowie is a singer from the older generation older people who look at this may laugh from fond memories of their youth the magazine does this well with the main feature of David Bowie. The genre of this magazine is heavy metal/rock this was the fashion when David Bowie was a popular singer. This magazine would be for people with special interests in this sort of music. The font and style of writing tells the audience what sort of genre this is has a black background and a man with white make-up on which signals a genre of the gothic nature. It hooks are things that are on in today's magazine like ‘Brand new collectors record section' I don't think they use hooks very well in this magazine because it isn't really anything good in the offer. the only main colours used is black and white, the white make-up connotes the gothic genre. The main feature is a close-up (c.u) of David Bowie. He is stereotyping the typical grunger who is always in a depressive state. The ideology of the magazine is they believe in sucide and stuff many famous gothic stars have been known to go into a depressive state and commit suicide.

How To Write A Concert Review

How To Write A Concert Review Amazing Concert Review: How to Start? Reviews are probably the most casual types of written assignments because they combine both: reporting on an issue and providing your own opinion. Its main goal is to evaluate and provide information on the regular events: shopping at the mall and judging the quality of items, watching a movie or reading a new book. Every time we do something we judge people, atmosphere or plot even without noticing it. Luckily, reviews are so different in shapes and topics that they don’t have a common structure. There are many genres that students may choose: evaluating musicals, movies, books, TV shows, places and much more! However, the main goal remains the same: to give an evaluation of the chosen topic. It may seem quite a simple task to provide your own ideas and judgments on the topic. Although there are still many rules that you should follow, all of the claims must be supported with evidence. It is not simply an interpretation of the topic but also arguments-based research on the chosen issue.   You need to make the reader believe your point of view. Concert review is not the most common assignment students may get. You should describe not only musicians but also evaluate location, time, atmosphere and even response of the audience. In addition, you need to compare the chosen concert with other concerts to give readers a broader picture of the topic. If you have troubles writing a concert review or it is actually your first review of such kind, go on reading, and we will give you all the tips you should know for a great result! Understanding Background Knowledge of Your Audience To write a catchy and interesting review, you should not only provide a chronology of events but also analyze the musical genre, have a solid understanding of the theory and various musical styles. Another important element before getting started is to know your audience. For example, if you are writing for teenagers, you need to concentrate on describing the performers: their outlook, behavior, dialogues and so on. However, if you write the review for your teachers, it is better to write about the composition, plot, engaged interests, and expression to show how well you have mastered the genre. What Does Your Audience Want to Know? In most cases, readers are interested in getting the general picture of the concert and its impact on the writer. However, if you are writing for people, who have a deep understanding and interest of musical genres, pedagogy, and instruments, don’t forget to include those details to your review. If you are writing for an audience that is interested in technical aspects, write about the scene, location, light, sound, and other important details. However, there are things which all of the readers not depending on their interests are willing to know: whether the instruments were appropriate for the piece, how the audience reacted and so on. Your Writing Style Information you provide is not the only thing that matters. You should be equally attentive to the way you express your ideas in order to engage the reader. When writing a concert review, you should be both formal and informal. Try to avoid personal pronouns, like ‘I,’ ‘you’ and ‘your’: they always show that you are subjective on the topic and the readers may doubt whether your opinion should be trusted. In addition, if you want to make your review professional and catchy, you need to avoid clichà ©s and general terms, like ‘interesting.’ Try to find synonyms instead, for example, ‘appealing’ or ‘outstanding.’ How to Write a Remarkable Concert Review? If you want to get a high grade and to engage the reader, understanding music and listening to various concerts is a must. Your ability to put impression into words is one of the key features you need to master if you expect a great result. Writing a concert review consists of two stages: on the first one you need to attend the event or listen to the audio, and on the second you need to write everything down.   Below we have collected all of the stages and elements you need to include to your concert review. Stages of Pre-writing Carefully Read Guidelines Concert review is quite a vivid assignment, so greatly depends on circumstances and requirements. For example, if you are writing for a teacher, you need to follow a particular formatting style and to make sure to include all of the required elements. However, if you are writing a paper article, it is important to know the audience. Get the Tickets Beforehand To make sure that you get the best seats, from where the scene and performers will be clearly seen, it is better to buy the tickets well in advance. Make Notes During the Concert This is one of the most challenging but yet important stages because the quality of your review greatly depends on how well you will write down all of the important details. Remember, you need to pay attention not only to the concert itself but also to the time and location, clothes of musicians, lighting, general atmosphere and much more. You can also make notes on the dialogues on stage and among visitors. Write Down Performed Compositions It is important to provide readers with information on what compositions made up the concert. If you miss any of the pieces, it is better to contact concert managers and to get a list of the compositions that were played. Later in your text, you can tell which of them you liked more and why. Tell About the Musicians You need to write down your impressions from performers. Where they good or bad? However, back your opinion with reasons why you consider performers good, average or bad. Make notes whether performers shared powerful energy with the audience. Don’t forget to notice gestures, mimics and other important details on stage. Additionally, concentrate on the leading singers: were they confident? How well did they interact with the audience? Did they use all space on stage? Examine the Audience It is a well-known fact that part of the performance depends on how well the audience responds. Of course, you need to focus on musicians, but there is also a need to notice the mood of the audience. Not depending on the goal of your concert review, your readers will be interested in the concert atmosphere, so make notes on the audience, its quantity, age and response to the concert. Writing Stage The second stage starts right after you leave the concert and must contain the following elements: Introduction In the first part of your review, you need to provide all of the important details considering the concert - for example, its title and date, venue, names of musicians and ensembles. You can also give details on the location to provide readers with a broader picture. This is especially important for readers, who are not familiar with the area. You also need to mention whether the concert took place in the evening or at night. Description Main paragraphs of your review must contain a description of various compositions that were played during the concert. Here is when your notes come in hand. Devote a separate paragraph to every composition or aspect you want to highlight. The format of your description greatly depends on the musical genre, but you should still mention composition’s title, name of the composer and information on the audience’s reaction on the discussed piece. Evaluation Evaluation section is the heart of your review because it contains your personal opinion based on the information you have provided in the previous body paragraphs. Here you should tell readers about the general experience of the concert. Tell the audience whether it was worth seeing or not. What made it different from other similar events? Here you can also include information about musicians, interesting facts, history and so on. In this part, you must provide both positive and negative thoughts on the performance. Was there anything that the concert lacked? What things could improve the show? In the evaluation section, you should also tell about the audience’s response. What songs or musicians got more applauds? Don’t forget to evaluate the organization of the event. It is also important to tell about the quality of music and sound, as well as of musical instruments. You can also compare the live and the studio versions: were they very different? Which one was better? Conclusion The closing paragraph of your review must be a summary of your experience and impression of the concert. In this section, you can mention whether the concert met your expectations. Remember that conclusion is for summarizing and not for providing any new information and details. Closing Thoughts Writing a concert review is quite different from other writing assignments, and it may take lots of time and preparation. Your main goal is to experience different emotions and then to render them to your target audience. If you want to create a great review, it is important to have a deep understanding of music and to understand format peculiarities. Hopefully, the tips above will be of great help!

Prostitution Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Prostitution - Coursework Example This was during the Korean war, when a tremendously high rate of sexually transmitted diseases began to affect the active soldier duty roster. Back home, prostitution is considered illegal in all U.S. states except Nevada. The reason being that Nevada has a historical connection to prostitution dating all the way back to the 18th century. According to Karah Lucas Nevada limits prostitution to legally registered brothels and towns with populations of less than 400,000 thus leaving Clark and Washoe counties out of the program (Legal Prostitution Has A Special Presence in Nevada, p. 1). The legalized prostitution program of Nevada has had a positive effect on the trade which our government should actually take notice of. Since the trade is overseen by the state, there are actually rules and regulations that insure the protection of the women in the trade, the men who partake of the benefits of the trade, and the state to whom the brothels pay business taxes to. According to Paul Armetano (The Case For Legalized Prostitution, p.1) , sexually transmitted diseases are actually controlled from spreading because of the weekly mandated testing for the prostitutes. For some strange reason, the brothels also take pride in having healthy women on their staff because it shows the quality of their â€Å"business†. Even though there are actual benefits to be had from the legalization of prostitution, such as the control of sexually transmitted diseases, protection of the sex worker, standardization of the work practice, and more importantly, additional income for the city or state, there are still those conservatives who fail to see these reasons. They choose to remain in their out-dated and out-moded world where prostitution is something that destroys lives due to the degradation and objectification of women. For those in the military service,
